BACKGROUND

I received a master's and doctorate in marine toxiciology before becoming a commercial fisherma'am in Prince William Sound, Alaska, in 1985. After witnessing first-hand the environmental destruction and social chaos from the Exxon Valdez oil spill (EVOS), I helped found three nonprofit organizations to deal with the lingering social, economic, and environmental harm from this spill. I have two books on EVOS, including Not One Drop: Betrayal and Courage in the Wake of the EVOS, which focuses on sociology -- disaster trauma, healing, and prevention including fundamental fixes to our governance, and Sound Truth and Corporate Myths, which focuses on toxicology -- effects of oil on humans and wildlife. I've been in several documentary DVDs that challenge our oil dependency, including the most recent feature documentary Black Wave: The Legacy of the EVOS (www.blackwavethefilm.com). I lecture internationally and have been hosted by over 70 US universities. My resume is posted on my web site: www.rikiott.com.

LECTURES

The 40-minute lectures are relevant for students of economics, environmental law, environmental ethics, marine toxicology, political science, sociology, and women's studies. I usually give one formal lecture at the school and open to the public, as well as several (2-4) informal classes.

Title 1: The Exxon Valdez Oil Spill IMPACT: People, Ecology, and Community
Paradigm shifts in oil ecotoxicology and sociology illuminate "Democracy Crisis" and need for deep social change.

Title 2: The Democracy Crisis
Evolution of "corporate persons" -- corporations with human rights, the demise of democracy, and what we can do about it.

FILM

For screenings of the 99-minute feature documentary film, Black Wave, I can provide a brief intro and Q/A period at the end. (I am the central character in this film.) This process usually takes about 2.5 hours. Click here to watch the Black Wave trailer.
